Welcome to Galleries Primitif |
Senta Taft-Hendry opened Galleries Primitif in Woollahra in 1960. It was the first authentic Tribal Art gallery to open in Australia and it has occupied the same premises since its inception. The gallery specializes in museum quality tribal art and artifacts from Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya (West Papua), Indonesia, Micronesia, Australia, Africa, and Polynesia. Senta and her original gallery manager, Leo Fleischman spent many years in the 60s, 70s and 80’s traveling to tribal areas living with, learning and collecting art from various regions. Senta also led trips for collectors through New Guinea, Mexico, Africa, Indonesia and the Easter Islands. Senta is a government approved valuer of Tribal, Inuit, Aboriginal and African art. Most of the art displayed in the gallery is from Senta’s or Leo Fleischman’s collection. Senta has been associated with collectors from all over the world. All pieces are authentic and museum quality and are typically old pieces. Senta has participated in tribal exhibitions in France, England, United States of America, New Zealand and well as numerous exhibitions throughout Australia. Some of the museums and galleries who have pieces originally from Galleries Primitif are the Museum of France, British Museum, New York Museum of Primitive Art, Museum of Volkerkunde, Germany, Argentia and National Art gallery of Australia.
